Microsoft announced that there is a possibility of introducing low cost Windows Phone 7 devices for countries such as India. With the release of the Kin social phone, which is designed for users on a budget, Microsoft is proposing the same idea with its upcoming Windows Phone 7 series. They want to design a phone that will be geared towards developing countries and markets. Their main target being India, which has the biggest and fastest growing smartphone market in the world. The low-cost Windows device should have some of the same features as the normal full-cost Windows 7 phone. We could see multi-touch screen, Bluetooth and a minimum of 128 MB RAM, 5 megapixel cameras, and wifi.
But there will be some differences, according to senior Microsoft official Sudeep Bharati. Bharati, who is the director of developer tools for Microsofts’ Visual Studio team in India, revealed that the low-cost model will have a different chassis design from the handsets that will be released with series of phones. He also thinks that they could have a smaller screen, which will help keep the overall cost down. Microsoft is still in talks with OEM over feedback on the new chassis and design. If all goes well, countries like India could see some of these new, lower cost Windows based handsets as soon as the beginning of 2011.
