Fixing Endless Reboot Microsoft Service Pack 3(SP3) bug for AMD Users
ADVERTISEMENTS
One of most awaited and mostly last biggest Service Pack 3 for Windows XP was recently made available for download. As soon as Microsoft Service Pack 3(SP3) was available for download many users rushed to download SP3.
Every thing was going smooth until it was noticed that on AMD machine after installing Service Pack 3 for windows XP, System starts endless reboot. Immediately after installing SP3 in AMD process machine users are greeted by blue screen of death & error message begins with some thing like this: STOP: 0×0000007E (0xC0000005 and contains the error text SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. And after this, the computer reboots again and keeps repeating this.
Both Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard are readying patches that should remedy the glitch, which seems to affect primarily users of AMD-based systems. Microsoft blamed OEMs who improperly placed a Windows XP image created for Intel-based machine on non-Intel-based systems.
A temporary fix is provided by Microsoft and HP, Both the fix are listed here
HP solution for XP SP3 Restart Bug:
→ Boot Computer in Safe Mode
→ Use Windows Explorer to browse to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
→ Right-click intelppm.sys and rename it to XXXintelppm.syx
→ Restart Windows
If the computer is unable to boot into safe mode do the following:
→ Press F8 during startup and load the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
→ Type the number that corresponds to your Windows installation
→ Log in as an administrator
→ Type cd c:\windows\system32\drivers at the command prompt
→ Type rename intelppm.sys XXXintelppm.syx
→ Restart Windows
The Microsoft fix for the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Restart Bug:
→ Boot the Computer into Safe Mode
→ Press Windows R, type regedit, hit enter
→ Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Intelppm
→ right-click the Start entry in the right pane and select modify
→ Enter 4 in the Value Data box
→ Close regedit, restart the computer
Till Actual Patch is made available, i hope This workaround will give little relief to AMD users suffering from Microsoft SP3 endless reboot bug.

I am in desperate need of help with this.
I have recently rebuilt the family pc using old components (not faulty, just obosolete because of upgrades) 1Ghz AMD MoBo. Installed win xp pro onto it and worked a beauty till SP3 installed, as far as I can gather from searching the hdd there is no intel DLL file fouling it up. the computer refuses to boot normally until i force it into safe mode and run a restore to prior SP3.
Apart from stuffing sp3 where the sun don’t shine, any advice on this tangent of a problem?
damm thing just found it.
intelppm.sys exists outside of OEM images.
Possibly comes along on discs with SP2 slipstreamed onto them?
my XP doesn’t have a recovery console, time for some linux and formatting.
