How To Disable Automatic App Updates on Windows 8/8.1 PC

Before Windows 8, there is no official app store or any application from Microsoft to download Windows apps on our PC. All the official apps were downloaded only from Microsoft’s website. In Windows 8, Microsoft added a separate Windows Store, similar to Mac app store on OS X to download apps easily. The same Microsoft account used in Windows phones can be used to download apps from your PC. When you freshly install Windows 8/8.1 version, there are some third party apps available by default.

A few weeks back, I wrote about an application, to remove the unwanted apps which come with Windows 8 by default. In both Windows 8 and 8.1, all the apps you install from Windows store will be updated automatically. So, today I’ve come with a simple tweak to disable the automatic app updates on your Windows 8/8.1 PC. The procedure is very simple, just follow the steps below.

Step 1: Open “Windows Store” from your start menu. If you can’t find it, just press “Winkey+S” on your keyboard and type “Windows Store”, it will show the application on the top.

Step 2: Click that and it will take you to the Windows store application. If you haven’t used Windows Store before, it will look similar to the screenshot above. Now Press “Winkey+C” to open the “Charms Bar”.

Step 3: Charms Bar is one of the unique features of Windows 8, which is like an additional menu of all the installed applications. In that Charms Bar, click “Settings” and it will open a new bar, there you will see the “App Updates” option as shown in the screenshot above.

Step 4: Click the “App Updates” option, it will redirect you to a new page as shown in the screenshot below. There you can see the option “Automatically Updates My Apps” is enabled.

Step 5: All you have to do is, just disable that option. Automatic app updates on your PC will be disabled. It will save your bandwidth, as well as you can update the apps only you need.

If you want to see what are all apps need to be updated, in the same page, click the “Check for updates” options below that “Automatic Update” button. It will list all the apps which have new updates. If you are using a mobile data connection or you have an internet connection with the limited data usage, this option will be very helpful to save your bandwidth. Try this tweak on your Windows 8/8.1 PC and share your experience with us in the comments. Thanks for reading, do share this post with your friends.
