There are situations where you need to copy text from either a PDF or an image. Sure, you can do it the old fashioned way by reading and writing it down on notepad but that can take a lot of time. Free OCR however makes that job easy. It’s a free Optical Character Recognition software for windows that gives you the ability to take out text from pictures/images, PDF’s and can export directly to Microsoft Word format. Another note worthy feature of this application is that you can also scan a document directly from your scanner and it will display and extract text from it as well.
Free OCR is a free application but it comes with third-party offers during installation which you can always decline. The interface is pretty simple but is equipped with good functionality. Here’s how it works.
After installing Free OCR, you’ll see several options. You can either scan a document from your scanner, open up an image file or open a PDF from which you want to extract the text from. Another feature you’ll see is it’s ability to choose from different languages (top right section of the application).
After opening a file, you can either OCR the current displayed page on the left panel or simple click on OCR all pages to retrieve text from all pages.
Free OCR uses the latest Tesseract (v3.01) OCR engine which increases accuracy. You may encounter tiny problems like extracting characters but that’s where common sense comes in play. We tested different images and PDF’s and it worked like a charm.
Verdict, if you’re looking to extract text from PDF’s, images or scanned documents, Free OCR is for you.
