Rename or Hide Your Android Devices in Google Play

If you’ve ever made use of the Google Play website rather than just using the store app on your Android device, you’ll know that any phones or tablets you own can be managed online. You can send apps to your device from the website which is a great way to install software if you have more than one Android.

But the name that is shown online may not tally up with how you refer to your device. For example, the HTC Sensation is displayed as the HTC Z710e — not a problem if this is the only HTC device you own, but if you have more than one, it can be difficult to quickly identify which device an entry refers to.

There is also something else to consider. You are not going to keep your phone forever, and when you invest in a new smartphone you’re not going to want to see constant references to a device you no longer own.  Thankfully, it is easy to manage you devices online, deleting those you no longer own and renaming those you do in a bid to make them easier to identify.

To start managing your devices, pay a visit to the Google Play website. Click the gear icon to the upper right hand corner of the page and select My Orders & Settings.

On the My Account page that loads, click the Settings tab and you will be shown a list of all of the devices you have registered with your Google account.

To help make your devices easier to identify, click one of the Edit links to the right hand side of the page. You can then enter a more meaningful nickname for each of your phones and tablets before clicking the Update link.

If there are any devices listed that you would prefer did not show up in the Google Play website, it is possible to opt to hide them from installation menus. Just clear the tick box labelled Show in menus next to any device you would like to remove from the site.

If you spend a few moments configuring your devices you can be sure that you only see the phones and tablets you are interested in in app installation menus, and that they are named in a way that works for you.

It’s worth bearing in mind that while it is possible to hide devices from your account, it is not possible to remove them completely.
