Deskew Scanned Images of Documents & Text Pages with Solway Deskew

Scanners have definitely made our life easier, one of the inexpensive way to get paper documents or book pages in electronic form. However even with today’s advance scanning technology scanners still fails to fix the skewed documents and often ends up scanning documents with slant. Such skewed documents are difficult to parse by OCR’s as even the slightest orientation in characters and text leads to lower character recognition accuracy rate also it doesn’t look good if you attempt to print such scanned documents.

Well the good thing is skewed documents can be corrected with the help of software, without the need of re-scanning. Here is one such freeware tool Solway’s Deskew, as the name suggests this tool lets you to correct the skewed documents.

Solway’s Deskew takes the scanned document image as input and produces the copy of deskewed image in the specified output directory. Solway Deskew is less than 1 MB in size and supports wide variety of scanned document image formats (BMP, JPG, PNG, MNG, JNG, GIF, DDS, TGA, PBM, PGM, PPM, PAM, PFM) and also allows you to output in BMP, JPG, PNG, MNG, JNG, GIF, DDS, TGA, PGM, PPM, PAM, PFM formats.

To start the process you need to browse and select skewed scanned document and set the output directory where you want the output to be saved,

Maximum skew angle setting lets you the specify the angle, If images are skewed more than this amount, they will not be deskewed. Most images of scanned pages will only be skewed by a few degrees. The larger the figure, the more angles have to be checked, and the slower the deskewing process. The default is 10 degrees.

Threshold: Use this setting if there isn’t much contrast between the text and background. For normal black text on white background, use the default setting. Once done click on deskew to start the process of deskewing.
