Fix Office 2010 Service Pack 1 (sp1) Installation Failed

Microsoft Office 2010Microsoft Office 2010 suite successor of Office 2007 was launched in June 2010 and first major update to Office 2010 suite i.e service pack 1 was released on July 2011. Users may download Office 2010 Sp1 via Microsoft download center manually or hit Windows update button to download sp1 automatically.

Unfortunately certain set of users are facing issues with Office 2010 service pack 1 deployment, where sp1 installation fails with either error “Code 78F Windows Update encountered an unknown error” or “The installation of this packaged failed.”

Upon further investigating the cause of error in Officesuitewwsp1-x-none_msplog.log the following error message can be seen,

Error 1935. An error occurred during the installation of assembly component <component GUID> . HRESULT: 0x80131047.

Several root causes may cause error 1935 or error 78F during the installation of the Office 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1). Typically, this issue occurs when Office 2010 was originally installed by using a temporary storage device.

Fortunately Microsoft has already identified and issues and have released a fix for this. As per Microsoft the issue is caused when Windows Installer encounters a reference to a drive that no longer exists, or to a removable media device that contains no readable media. For example, this issue may occur when the Windows Installer encounters a reference to an empty DVD or CD drive.
