How to Manually Update Motorola Xoom to Android 3.1 Honeycomb

Yesterday at Google I/O 2011 (day 1) annual event Google announced an update to Honeycomb tablet os, Android 3.1, which includes support for new Google Music service as well as several other enhancements to existing Android 3.0 functionality and new features such as USB host API, support for USB accessories, resizable home screen widgets,  UI refinements and performances enhancements.

Android 3.1 honeycomb updates is incremental update and Verizon’s Motorola XOOM tablet owners will be getting this update over the air in next few days. We know nobody likes to wait for update hence we are here with guide on how to manually update Xoom to Android 3.1. Thanks to Kaushik Dutta for Android 3.1 download link and installations guide.

Please note the guide is only applicable for rooted XOOM tablets.

How to Update Motorola Xoom to Android 3.1 Honeycomb

1.  Download Android 3.1 Honeycomb

2. Run following commands on Android adb console (must have Android SDK installed)

adb push <zip name> /sdcard/

adb shell


cd /cache

mkdir recovery #it may already exist

cd recovery

echo ‘–update_package=CACHE:/recovery/’ > command

cat /sdcard/ >

reboot recovery

That’s it, after your Xoom reboots it must be updated to Android 3.1. Enjoy.
