Bing App for Windows Mobile 6.5 Now With Turn-by-Turn GPS

Google isn’t the only ones to offer free turn-by-turn navigation on their mobile apps.  Just this morning Microsoft released an updated version of the Windows Mobile Bing app.  The mobile Bing app, which has been available as a beta version, has some nice new features.  The obvious big addition is the free turn-by-turn voice navigation.  This is a really big deal for the struggling Windows Phone 6.5, there has never really been a good free navigation app available to users until now.

At first glance, the Bing app’s navigation features look similar to Google’s Navigation feature on its Google Maps app.  This is just by design, Microsoft has done a good job with this update.  The app offers lifelike voice prompting navigation, and a whole bunch of route configuration options.  bing windows mobile tun by turn

This is all accessible from the new redesigned homescreen, which includes some new buttons.  Users can access the new features by selecting the “Directions” button on the newly redesigned homescreen.  Microsoft has also added a real-time traffic feature to the app, which allows the users to avoid traffic and toll booths and all that annoying traffic stuff.  The route calculation seems quite accurate, and the audible directions are very clear sounding and “lifelike”.

The new Bing app is available for select phones on AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile.  For some reason Verizon’s phones were left out of the mix.  The following phones are compatible with the new navigation features:  (this only applies to new navigation features, all other phones can use the basic features of the app)

  • HTC Fuze
  • HTC Pure
  • HTC HD2
  • HTC Tilt 2
  • HTC Touch Diamond 2
  • HTC Touch HD
  • HTC Touch Pro
  • HTC Touch Pro 2
  • Motorola Q9c
  • Samsung Jack
  • Samsung Omnia II
  • Samsung Propel
  • T-Mobile Dash 3G

  1. I tried this app on my HD HTC2. This app is awesome. Besides being free, it does turn-by-turn voice direction on the GPS, movie times, and news. Thanks Microsoft.

  2. I’d love to use this version on my HTC Touch 2 (without navigation), but after starting and working for a minute it shows me an error “this app was not designed for your phone” and quits.
Even if I don’t use navigation it just quits like this.

Do I need to switch something off to be able to use the app?

  3. I HAVE A SPRINT HTC TOUCH PRO 2 and I love this app. Even my husband was impressed and he has the iphone.

  4. Same issue on my Samsung Intrepid running WM 6.5. I liked it on my previous Windows mobile 6.1 phone, but it seems like the hardware support is pretty narrow.

  5. I don’t have a data plan on my phone (I refuse to pay for internet at home and on the phone) I do have a WIFI on this phone, so the Bing maps work when I am in the hotspot.
Is it possible to download maps for bing mobile so I can use it without data plan?
