Yesterday we had reported about Purplera1n jailbreak for iPhone 3GS released by Geohot. The initial release of Purplera1n beta is buggy and doesn’t work on Windows 7, also many users has reported issue on Windows Vista.

Today Geohot has released Purplera1n RC2 which has support for Windows 7 32-bit as well as 64-bit and some kernel patches. The only tool released by iPhone Dev team to jailbreak iPhone & iPod Touch 3.0 are Redsn0w & Pwnagetool. Out of these Redsn0w 0.7.2 is available for both Windows & Mac Operating system. However Pwnagetool 3.0 is only for Mac Users.

There are several reports of Pwnagetool 3.0 having issue with PPC version of Mac OS X. today iPhone dev team has released Pwnagetool 3.01 fixing compatibility issue with PPC version of Mac OS X also the Icy package is updated.

There is no information about Pwnagetool 3.01 release on iPhone dev team blog but it has been released as torrent on piratebay with following note added to torrent.

“PwnageTool 3.01 is a Mac based iPhone firmware creation tool for creating custom ipsw/firmware for the 1st gen iPod Touch, iPhone and iPhone 3G (NOT 3GS). The wait for iPhone 3GS owners is over now as first tool Purplera1n to Jailbreak iPhone 3G S OS 3.0 has been released by GeoHot. However Mac users will be disappointed as Purplera1n is only for Windows as of now.

Purplera1n uses iBoot Environmental Variable Overflow present in iPhone 3GS bootrom to inject code to jailbreak iPhone 3GS. Purplera1n is fairly simple to use to jailbreak iPhone 3G OS 3.0. Here we have got simple guide on how to jailbreak iPhone 3GS 3.0 using Purplera1n on Windows.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3GS 3.0 Firmware

1. Download Purplera1n for Windows (works only on Windows Vist & Xp)

2. You must have installed iTunes 8.2. if you don’t have iTunes 8.2 then download iTunes 8.2 from here

3. Connect your iPhone 3GS 3.0 to computer

4. Double Click & Start Purplera1n

5. Click “make it ra1n”.

6. Wait. On bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app

7. Follow onscreen instructions to complete jailbreak

The first jailbreak for iPhone 3GS has been released Geohot but not by iPhone dev team. Geohot was the one who found the first IBoot Environment Variable Overflow and released “purplera1n” to jailbreak iPhone 3GS.

Well it seems there is some clashes between iPhone dev team and Geohot philosophy. Last week we had reported that iPhone Dev team wont release Jailbreak & Unlock tool for iPhone 3GS since they don’t want to apple to fix this bug and render iPhone 3GS un-jailbreakable and potentially losing hope to unlock.

Where as geohot says “whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn’t how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn’t worth waiting because you might have the “last” hole in the iPhone. What last hole…this isn’t golf. I’ll find a new one next week”

Anyways leaving discussion of clashes between Geohot and iPhone Dev team. iPhone 3GS Jailbreak is here but its only for Windows.

We have already reported about iPhone Dev team success in jailbreaking & unlocking iPhone 3GS. However iPhone Dev will not release jailbreak & unlock for iPhone 3GS soon considering very less number of users have iPhone 3GS.

Apple has already release iPhone OS 3.1 beta to developers and chances are that they may fix the bug used in jailbreaking iPhone 3GS. So you must stay away from firmware 3.1. Today iPhone Dev team has published video showing ultrasn0w in action to unlock iPhone 3GS 3.0.

Ultrasn0w uses the at+xlog crash as an injection vector unlocking payload and it does so on the 3GS in exactly the same way as on the 3G! But this injection vector will be lost if you update to 3.1 using the official Apple IPSW, which updates the baseband.

So stay away from official 3.1 IPSWs until iPhone Devteam releases the tools that let you update the firmware without updating the baseband.
