Wordpress 2.5 Upgrade Steps Procedure My Experience

This was My 1st Wordpress 2.5 Upgrade Experience & it went successful :) . I was little tens as I was upgrading wordpress version first time on my blog.

For precaution I did upgraded my home test blog installed on XAMPP and it went very smooth with no glitch at all. So I was confident that I will do it. Wordpress 2.5 was released in first week of March.

Last Day when logged in to admin panel it was showing message for wordpress new version

Since it was Sunday, I decided to upgrade it. I knew that Wordpress.org has guide for How to Upgrade i quickly read that steps and started for Wordpress 2.5 Upgrade Process.

Following are the steps For WordPress Upgrade

First Step which was most important incase of fallback –BACKUP

We need to backup two things

• Wordpress Database
• Wordpress Core files

Wordpress Database backup

My cPanel has built-in Backup option which allows me to download backup of following stuff

1. Database backup
2. Home Directory Backup
3. Email forwarder and filter backup

I had chosen to use two methods for database backup
1) With above backup utility I had done backup of wordpress database
2) As per wordpress backup document I had use Export method for wordpress database and downloaded that export file to local machine

Wordpress Core Files Backup

Like database i had chosen 2 methods for wordpress core file backup
1) On site backup i.e creating new folder and copied all files to this new folder
2) Offsite i.e. zipped files of wordpress core files & downloaded on Local machine

We have now done with backup

let’s start Actual Upgrade Procedure

• Deactivated all plug-ins
• Downloaded Wordpress 2.5 and Uploaded to Server
• Renamed wp-content, wp-includes & wp-admin as wp-content-bk, wp-includes-bk & wp-admin-bk folders
• Extracted wordpress 2.5 files right their with replace option on
• Once all files are extracted move all themes and plug-ins from you old i.e wp-content-bk folder to new wp-content folder
• Check your blog and login in to wordpress admin and you will be asked for database Upgrade
• On successful Database Upgrade – Welcome to Your new Admin panel – Wordpress 2.5 Dashboard Looks really nice

Post Upgrade Task

Don’t forget to activate your plug-ins if possible also upgrade your plug-ins. Wordpress 2.5 allows you to upgrade plug-ins automatically

Clean Up – You can now safely delete your old backup folder and bk folders

DO BACKUP your latest Wordpress 2.5 Database and Core files

When you are Upgradding your blog your visitor will get Error 404 Page Not Found so

So do make sure You Maintenance Mode.

It was so simple to upgrade wordpress. i am happy that i have selected wordpress compared to b2evolution
