How To Jailbreak iPhone 3G 3.1 with PwnageTool 3.1

The good news for iPhone and iPod Touch owners is here, iPhone Dev team has officially released PwnageTool 3.1 first jailbreak and unlock tool for OS 3.1. You can download PwnageTool 3.1 and start jailbreaking iPhone 3G 3.1, iPhone 2G & iPod Touch 1G on Mac OS X. Unfortunately Windows users need to wait for some more time as Redsn0w for Windows is yet to be released.
To make it easier for you we are here with complete guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G 3.1, once you have jailbreaked iPhone 3G 3.1 you can unlock it with Ultrasn0w and use it with carrier of your choice.
Tools Required
2. Download Original iPhone 3G 3.1 Firmware (iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw)
How To Jailbreak iPhone 3G 3.1 with PwnageTool 3.1
1. Firmware downloaded in Tools sections save it on your computer (Preferably create a folder Pwnage and save in that folder this is for simplicity)
2. Download PwnageTool 3.1 and save it in pwnage folder.
3. Keep your iPhone connected to your computer.
4. Double click PwnageTool 3.1 to mount it and create shortcut of PwnageTool in pwnage folder.
5. Now Launch PwnageTool and click ok on warring message “PwnageTool is a free tool”
6. Select Expert Mode from Top left menu.
7. Now select Device i.e iPod Touch , iPhone and click on Blue arrow icon to continue.
8. PwnageTool will auto detect your Firmware 3.1 IPWS file downloaded in step 1, if not then click browse and select proper file.
9. Select the apps you want to install from given menu, at least cydia installer and click on build to start custom firmware building process.
10. Now select location to save custom IPWS file created by PwnageTool.
11. PwnageTool 3.1 may take 10-15 min to complete Custom iPhone 3G 3.1 IPSW file creation.
12. Enter Admin password.
13. PwnageTool 3.1 will display a prompt “has your iPhone 3G been pwned before?” If you are unsure, click no.
14. Turnoff your iPhone as per directions keep it connected.
15. This step is important for you, Do follow PwnageTool instruction properly.
You will be asked to press following key sequences
- Hold the Home button for 5 seconds,
- Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds,
- Then release the Power button while continuing holding the Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode
(Fix DFU Mode Bug in Mac OS X 10.5.6)
16. A message will be displayed when your iPhone enters in DFU mode.
17. Now launch iTunes and restore your iPhone with your custom firmware bundle by holding the “Alt/Option” button and clicking “restore”.
18. Browse and Select the custom IPSW file you created (iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Custom_Restore.ipsw) and click “open”.
19. iTunes 9 will restore your iPhone, Process may take 10-15 minutes.
20 Your iPhone 3G 3.1 will reboot automatically
21. That’s it, if you have followed above steps properly then you will have your iPhone 3G 3.1 jailbreaked.

When I jailbroke my iPhone running OS 3.1, I no longer could connect to my carrier. My iPhone is not factory locked to any network and I don’t get the message ‘no service’, there is literally no option to search for a carrier. What i’m basically trying to say is that the jailbreak turned my iPhone 3G (Non-S) into an iPod touch. lol. I had to restore back to the official ipsw file for it to work again.
Any comments on what I might have done wrong would be highly appreciated. Thanks

when i browsed for the ipsw, they said “wrong firmware bundle selected” but i downloaded it from the link up there. what did i do wrong?

Today jailbroke iPhone 3G with OS 3.1 running, for a short while i had connection with Vodacom, but now it’s shows ‘no service’ as well. Switch the SIM card into an other cellphone, no problem with the service!
Unfortunately I think I’ve to restore it again.
Does this work for the 3gs? (first jailbreak))

I too have the same results as Niqua on my Iphone 3G. I chose the one on the right that says “Iphone 3G”. Guess there is still ironing out left.
I think its a bit confusing because it says “Iphone 3G” on the picture but when you mouseover it says “Iphone 3G(S)”. So which one is it?

This Pwnage 3.1 works for my 3g with Apples 3.1 already in it. Now I need to unlock. Anyone know if ulstrasn0w will work on 3.1? Or any other way?

I’m from Middle East and I have unofficial Iphone (I guess) though its unlocked since I bought and I can use any SIM card, I jailbreaked with my Mac twice but had similar result like Nigua. I installed Fuzzyband after Cydia was installed and then added the source for ultrsnow but didn’t work as well!!
So what should we do??!

I think you might have upgraded the OS when you jailbroke it. What breaking tool did you use?
If you upgraded the OS you might have installed a baseband that locked your phone and you cant unlock it.
I used Pwnage tool with above steps to jailbreak so I can use Cydia apps. I used to jailbreak previously when I had 3.0 OS
Yes, I have upgraded my iphone to 3.1 accidentally although I can use my iphone with any any service provider. So what should I do if I want Cydia or installous?

Thanks for your comment and response, which hinted me and that my iphone is officially unlocked. Means that I had to uncheck the “Activate my phone” coz my iphone is already activated from the factory.
However, I have one last question, do I need to install ultrasnow so I can use it with other sim card? i.e. what is the purpose of ultrasnow or fuzzyband?

If your phone is locked (wont allow other sim cards to work but you want to use another sim card) then you need to unlock it with ultrasn0w. In many cases like mine, my 3.1 has a 05.11 baseband which cannot allow my phone to be unlocked.
You can check your baseband by looking in your phone at Seettings>General>About, then scroll down to modem firmware. If you have 05.11.07, you wont be able to unlock it. If you have another one, you can try ultrasn0w. If ultrasn0w is not enough, you can use Fuzzyband to downgrade your baseband and then use ultrasn0w.

I have the “fateful” 05.11.07, and wanting to unlock…so I gather I’m stuffed? But are you suggesting too, that if we wait for a while, some kind soul will allow us to “recover” the baseband to an unlockable status?
And just to be clear, will the “restore” option (in iTunes) allow me to get back to my original state, or has that Baseband problem been irrevocably added to my phone?

I have used every possible way I can find to restore with alternative and older operating systems. I cant back up to older ones because iTunes will tell you it is incompatible with your phone.
There is some tricky thing about that baseband. I HOPE someone smart is working on unlocking phones with that baseband or we are stuck.

Yes, I read about the baseband and knew about it. My Iphone has the common baseband “05.11.07″, however, I’ve used another sim card (with same network carrier) and it worked without any ultrasnow or fuzzyband!! So I my device is clean have and I know its factory unlocked since I bought it here in ME. I guess I am lucky.
Guys, you need to uncheck “Active the phone” and uncheck ” Enable baseband update” for ppl who have official unlocked device.

what about the 3g 3.1.1, any idea if we can upgrade and use the same Pwnage tool to jailbreak?
I managed to jailbroke my friend’s iphone as well without any difficulties. He bought the iphone from the same retailer I did.
I tried to install Installous from Cydia by the old method (old OS 3.0) but it didn’t work. We’ve added the “hackolu.us” source in Cydia then installed Installous but it didn’t work. Many error appeared such as “Cached failure” and “error link” etc.
So any idea how to install Installous?
I have the same issue as the first comment. I jailbroke my iphone 3g 3.1 and everything installed great but now I have no bars ontop and every call fails..say AT&T but nada…. reset networ settings too…any suggestions?

I’m new to all of this but here is my situation. I just bought a iphone 3g from a friend and the firmware is 2.2.1 with baseband 2.30.03 and bootloader ver 6.02. I just jailbroke with quickpwn but i know you cant unlock it with that baseband version with yellowsn0w. So my question is should i update to 3.1 with the custom firmware and unlock with ultrasn0w? will the baseband be 04.26.08 or 05.11.07? Also im with tmobile. please if anyone can give me some answers i’ll really appreciate.

You should be able to unlock it. If you cant unlock it now, then using Cydia, download Fuzzyband. Try to use that to downgrade your baseband then unlock it.

I think we all have (almost) the same problem with our beloved iPhone..
I do too, I accidentally updated the firmware to 3.1 and the baseband to 5.11.xx,
took me awhile to figure how to downgrade the firmware, a little bit tricky.. (for a newbie),
short story, i did downgrade to 3.0.1 but the baseband remains the same (5.11.xx),
as we all know, it wont unlock the iPhone.. and worse,
Cydia is installed but i couldn’t open Cydia,
Everytime I tried to open it to install ultrasnow.. it just show me a black screen for 2 seconds and back to home screen.
this is exhausting.. i’m about to depressed?!

I got a 3gs and accidentely upgraded to 3.1. It was never jailbreak before. So now it is showing a screen with a cable signal with the cd figure and nothing else, not even open for a emergency call. How can I jailbreak it?

Actually; I’ve tried accessing ipsw 3.0, 3.0.1, 3.1, 3.1.2 and NONE of them read properly. All get “wrong firmware bundle selected.”

You can unlock and Jailbreak your 3.1 with the new modem firmware which was keeping us all locked up. The Firmware 05.11.07 problem has now been fixed. I have done it on 2 iPhone 3G with 3.1 and newest bootloader etc.

CAN ANYONE TELL ME.my iPhone 3g recently went in for repair and when it came back it had os3.1 on it.when I bought the phone it had 2.2.1 on it.the repairers said they put a new board in the phoneand my phone has a new imei number and new serial number in it.so can I downgrade to 3.0 with all the stuff they done.
