How to Uninstall iTunes 8.2 From Mac & Windows

ADVERTISEMENTS

Uninstall Apple iTunes 8.2

Today apple has released iTunes 8.2 & QuickTime 7.6.2 via software update. Apple’s move to release iTunes 8.2 indicates iPhone OS 3.0 public release is around the corner as iTunes 8.2 has support for iPhone OS 3.0. However if you are planning to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.0 then don’t attempt to install iTunes 8.2.

This comes as a warning from Musclenerd of iPhone Dev Team. Latest version of iTunes 8.2 changes the way your computer talks to the device. This affects jailbreaking tools like QuickPwn and PwnageTool when they attempt to identify what’s connected.

Well above changes in iTunes  8.2 are not related to anti-jailbreaking campaign of Apple it’s just due to change in protocol i.e way iPhone & iPod mobile device communicate with Coputer.

If you have already upgraded to iTunes 8.2  then you may wan to downgrade to older iTunes version.

Windows users may simply uninstall iTunes 8.2 via control panel.

Mac Users need to run following command on Terminal to completely uninstall iTunes 8.2.

sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DeviceLink.framework /System/Library/Extensions/AppleMobileDevice.kext /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iTunesAccess.framework /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreFP.framework /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework

Basically above command will permanently delete iTunes 8.2 files from your Mac.

To download older version of iTunes head towards oldapps.com

If you have not upgraded or installed iTunes 8.2 then wait till iPhone Dev team come up with working version of QuickPwn & Pwnagetool.

I could not find Terminal.app
I barely know if that’s an application I should download.
I would appreciate if anyone could let me know.
I ended up following rougher instructions, wich seem to have worked fine so far.
I only had to import the mobile apps from the iTunes Import
Choose the iTunes Music Library.xml that’s on the desktop
This should rebuild your library/playlists

You can now delete those library files on the desktop
You should be good to go”

Thank you,
best
F.

the text came incomplete, sorry,
there it goes again:
“Open your Applications folder, and drag iTunes to the trash. Restart your Mac and empty the trash to ensure iTunesHelper is not running and not installed. Go to your Music directory and open up the iTunes folder. Move iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml to your desktop. Install the version of iTunes you’ve been trying to install. Open it up, and go to File > Import
Choose the iTunes Music Library.xml that’s on the desktop
This should rebuild your library/playlists.
You can now delete those library files on the desktop
You should be good to go.”

Yeah, fantastic, except after I uninstalled iTunes 8.2 from Add/Remove Programs and reinstalled 8.1, I now get “The “file iTunes Library.itl” cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes”.

Great.

Renaming my iTunes Library.itl file to iTunes Library.itl.old and then replacing it with the last backup from my Previous iTunes Libraries folder fixed the issue; would have been really helpful to have included this info in your tutorial…

Thanks for the info anyway.

Apple just “pushed” iTunes 8.2 onto my iMac. If I uninstall it and install an earlier version from one of the sites you recommend, what’s to prevent another “push” of iTunes 8.2 or later version in the future? I have a Pre and just got locked out of iTunes after they pushed the 8.2 update. Thanks.
