Apart from being an open source platform, one big thing that bridges the gap between Android and Chrome is the word Google. Already we have a decent amount of apps in both Play Store and Chrome web store to connect Android and Google Chrome. It helps you sync text messages, media files and much more from your Android device to PC. A few months back, I wrote about Mighty Text, which lets you send and receive text messages from your Gmail account from Chrome and about Spots, which will bring all calls, text messages and notifications to your browser. Today I’ve come with another interesting application called “Chrome APK Packager”, which can convert Android apps into Chrome extensions. Here’s how it works.
Chrome APK Packager is a free application from a developer in XDA Community. Initially, the APK file was available only in the XDA Developer’s Community and later it was added to the Play Store. Seems like the app was removed from the Google Play Store, but still you can download the APK file from the developer’s page in the XDA Developers forum using the link below. It is a very simple application and the installation is pretty quick. Once you complete the installation, you will see a window as shown in the screenshot above. Using the app, you can convert the installed apps or an APK file on your device into a Chrome extension.
After you choose the APK file or an app in your device, it will ask you to select the app orientation and device mode for the Chrome app. In device mode, you have two options, either you can choose Phone mode or Tablet mode and you can choose the orientation for the app as Portrait or Landscape. Click the next button on the bottom of the window, it will start converting the app into a chrome extension. Based on the size of the app, the conversion process will take time.
Once the conversion process is complete, it will generate the converted Chrome extension in a ZIP file. The inbuilt options will let you share the extension to different applications as shown in the screenshot above. You can try the converted app in the Chrome browser on your PC. It is an excellent concept, which will give much more useful extensions for Chrome. People who own an Android device and use Chrome for all their browsing activities, should definitely try this app. Don’t forget to share your experience with us in the comments.
