There are plenty of RSS Readers coming in for mobiles and desktop, after Google Reader shutdown. Previously we have covered some of the important RSS Readers and best RSS News Reader apps for Android. Today I came with an another simple RSS Reader called Sputnik, which is available as a desktop application for Windows, Mac and Linux. The app doesn’t have any special features or functions in it. A very simple desktop news reader app, which gives an excellent readability and a clutter interface.
To start with Sputnik, you don’t need to register or log in with any social media accounts. Just download the app, add your feeds and start using it. You can download the app from Sputnik’s website and it’s very simple to install. The size of the app is very less and the installation is pretty quick. Once you install the app you will see a home screen as shown in the screenshot above. In the left panel you have controls, settings and subscribed feeds list.. In the right panel, you have stories from the feeds you select.
To add feeds, click the “Add Feeds” button on the window and add the URL or if you have a backup file of all your feeds subscriptions, just locate the file in your computer and it will sync automatically. Once you add the feeds, all recent stories will be available on the right panel. You can click the title of an article, to view that story in your browser. There is no inbuilt video player for the app, so you have to view the videos in browser.
To know the keyboard and mouse shortcuts, click the “Keyboard Mouse icon” at the bottom of the left panel. This will show you the shortcuts to get the options instantly. Near to that, you can see the “Settings” icon, which will helps your to customize the articles displayed and saved in your computer. It has an option to manage the hard disk space by removing old articles automatically.
In Sputnik, you can tag the articles under a specific keyword for later access. This will help you to categorize your favorite articles inside the app. Also you can organize the feeds into different categories using the “Category” option in “more” button on the top. You can categorize the feeds into Tech, Health, Fitness, etc., for easy access. Sputnik offers portability by using the “Import/Export” option in the “more” button. You can copy someone’s feed and import into the app or export and take a backup of your feeds.
Even though we have plenty of RSS apps for mobiles and desktop, Sputnik is a very simple app and gives a good readability. So, if you are looking for clutter free news reader, Sputnik is a best choice. Try this in your PC and share your experience with us in the comments. Thanks for reading, do share this post with your friends.
