There can be few serious internet users who have not tested the speed of their connection on their desktop computer or laptop. But the same cannot be said of mobile data usage. When you’re using your phone you probably don’t think about how fast you can download and upload data, but there’s absolutely no reason not to check.
The appropriately named Internet Speed Meter is a free tool for your Android device that can be used to not only check the speed of your mobile internet connection, but also keep an eye on how much data you are using. This is great if you are on a phone contract with a limit on data usage or for those times when you travel abroad and need to monitor your roaming data usage.
There is a free version of the app available in the form of Internet Speed Meter Lite which you can download from Google Play.
Launch the app and you’ll be presented with a grid of data usage for the past month — this will gradually fill up as you continue to use the app. Look to the notification bar at the top of the screen and you’ll see and constantly updated indicated of your download speed.
Swipe down from the top of the screen and in the notification screen that appears you can see further information about your connection. As well as the speed of your connection, you’ll also see the name of the network you’re connected to and a running tally of the amount of data you have usage on a data or wifi connection.
There are a few settings that you might be interested in. Tap the setting button and select Preferences and you can opt to display both upload and download speeds in the swipe down menu. You can also change the units used to display speed and assign yourself a monthly mobile data usage limit.
If you are interested in taking advantage of a few extra options, you might be interested in the paid-for version of the app. Internet Speed Meter is very cheap, but add a number of extra feature such as a the ability to view upload and download speed at the same time in the notification bar.
