I applied it to the messages that showed up with the filter, and they still came up marked as unread.

As well when I proceeded to the Next Step of the filter creation an alert window notified me saying:

&quot;Warning: Filter searches containing &#039;label:&#039;,  &#039;in:&#039;, or &#039;is:&#039; criteria are not recommended, as these criteria will never match incoming mail.

Do you still wish to continue to the next step?&quot;

I continued and applied the filter to the spam messages that were showing as unread.

They did not get marked read.

I am using the Google Apps gmail.
The settings are the same regardless.</description>
