I applied it to the messages that showed up with the filter, and they still came up marked as unread. As well when I proceeded to the Next Step of the filter creation an alert window notified me saying: "Warning: Filter searches containing 'label:', 'in:', or 'is:' criteria are not recommended, as these criteria will never match incoming mail. Do you still wish to continue to the next step?" I continued and applied the filter to the spam messages that were showing as unread. They did not get marked read. I am using the Google Apps gmail. The settings are the same regardless. This did not work for me.
I applied it to the messages that showed up with the filter, and they still came up marked as unread.
