One thing which still bugs me is that Unread Spam mail count, and every time I open my Gmail inbox I have to mark all spam mail as read or delete it manually. Today while searching for solution to unread spam mail i got really simple trick.

This did not work for me.
I applied it to the messages that showed up with the filter, and they still came up marked as unread.

As well when I proceeded to the Next Step of the filter creation an alert window notified me saying:

“Warning: Filter searches containing ‘label:’, ‘in:’, or ‘is:’ criteria are not recommended, as these criteria will never match incoming mail.

Do you still wish to continue to the next step?”

I continued and applied the filter to the spam messages that were showing as unread.

They did not get marked read.

I am using the Google Apps gmail.
The settings are the same regardless.
