Defragmentation process reduces the amount of fragmentation present on your hard drive. Commonly available Defragmentation tool like windows default Defragmentation lets you to defragment whole drive /partition of hard disk. This requires at least 25% of free space.

However some time you may feel like just to defragment only set of files or selected files and folder rather then opting for whole drive Defragmentation. I haven’t seen any free Defragmentation tool which lets you to defragment only selected files and folder.

Here is one freeware Defragmentation tool, Defraggler 1.03.094 developed by piriform, company which has given popular app like Ccleaner and Recuva.

Defraggler differs from other defrag tools, by enabling you to defragment only selected files and folder quickly and simply, without having to process the whole drive. Simply run it, select the files and defragment in seconds.

I really like CCleaner, but not so positive on defraggler. I tried it once, and it didn’t seem to do a good job- left too many fragmented files behind and could not defragment the MFT.

For now, I am sticking with Diskeeper 2008, which i find to be the best. It’s not free, but the performance is excellent, and it’s the easiest to use. It’s an automatic defragger, so I just installed it and now it does the job in the background without bugging me. Diskeeper also defrags the MFT, pagefile etc., and it defragmented my drives even when there was only ~10% free space :)
