How to Jailbreak iPhone 3GS 4.0 iOS with PwnageTool 4.0

Now that Pwnagetool 4.0 to jailbreak iOS 4.0 has been released, iPhone 3GS users can get their iPhone jailbreaked and unlocked running iOS 4.0. However you must note that only if you have iPhone 3GS with old bootrom  can use Pwnagetool 4.0 to jailbreak iOS 4.0.

We have already covered detailed guides to Jailbreak iPhone 3G 4.0 & Jailbreak iPod Touch 2G 4.0 iOS with Redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5 on Windows as well as Mac. Now here is details guide to jailbreak iPhone 3GS 4.0 iOS.

Pwnagetool 4.0

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3GS 4.0 iOS with PwnageTool 4.0

1. Download iOS 4.0 for iPhone 3GS

2. Download iTunes 9.2

3. Download PwnageTool 4.0

4. Connect your iPhone 3GS to Mac and Pwnagetool will auto detect your iDevice.

5. Now browse & Select iPhone 3GS iOS 4 firmware file that you downloaded from Step 1 (iPhone2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw)

6. Follow on screen instructions & click ‘Build’ and PwnageTool 4.0.

7. Navigate to the place you want to save Custom IPSW for iOS 4.0 and click on ‘save’ .

8. Pwnagetool 4.0 will start cooking custom firmware, once complete you will see “iHaz Success!” screen.

9. Connect your iPhone to your Mac/PC and enter into DFU mode (The Pwnage too will walk you through, don’t worry its easy).

10.  After you have successfully entered DFU mode, open your iTunes. It will detect your phone in DFU mode and give you an option to ‘Restore’ you phone. You must hold your ‘Option’ key on the Mac and click on ‘Restore’, iTunes will give you a chance to navigate to YOUR custom restore file.

11. Select Custom Firmware iOS 4.0 ipsw file created using Pwnagetool 4.0 and let iTunes does the rest of work.

    If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS with the OLD BOOTROM and you DID NOT use Spirit to jailbreak then you can create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore with your jailbroken recovery mode.

    I had iphone 3gs-3.1.2/5.11.07,accidently upgraded to 3.1.3 and got bb changed to 05.12.01.here’s my question;Can i downgrade to 3.1.2 and then JB using pwnagetool so ican get the 4.0 upgrade and jailbreak.By the way I have MC model.I know i can unlock but to have the JB is the most important!!!Thank-You for your time.Dan Mclellan.

    Hi!

    I didn’t get this work with pwnagetools DFU mode, instead that I entered to recovery mode, which I done by doing next steps:
    1. turn off phone and unplug it from usb cord.
    2. turn iTunes 9.2 on.
    3. when phone turned off press and hold home button, and plug usb cord to phone while still holding home button. 4. Wait still few seconds and hold the home button and iTunes should pop message that it has noticed iPhone is in recovery mode.
    5. Now press alt and click recovery from iTunes, and select that custom ispw that you made with pwnagetool. It should now start recovering your new iOS4.0.

    I’ve got a 3gs with the old bootroom, jailbroken previously for 3.1.2 with quickpwn. This new method for 4.0 doesn’t work with me, when I try to restore with iTunes I get error 1600! Any clue on how to solve this?

    When i create custom firmware and connect my iphone 3GS then a click shift+restore and select firmware but an itunes still loading on screen and on table is wrote (Preparing iPhone for Restore) and after 5 minutes is on screen table (Error 1604) ? why ? and i try change PC restart another USB port but nothing works Please Help :D

    I’m getting a new 3GS 8gb. I have a PC. Your instructions seem to be for a Mac. Ex: “You must hold your ‘Option’ key on the Mac and click on ‘Restore’, iTunes will give you a chance to navigate to YOUR custom restore file.” I’d really appreciate it if you wouldn’t mind please clarifing the exact instruction for a PC.

    Also, I want to confirm that these instructions and the downloads will work with the new 3GS 8gb Iphones that Apple is putting out this month.

    I appreciate your support, as I am not a techy and just want to use an Iphone with T-mobile.

    I have a 3gs 3.1.2 phone. same was already unlocked earlier. everything was ok but when i connected to Itunes it said to upgrade to IOS4. thus i updated. after updating, it has got locked.

    Dont know if its got IOS 4 on it. or still 3.1.2.

    Can anyone help me to please unlock my phone.

    same error – If in DFU mode I get the 1600, and if in recovery mode i get the 1604 error. Please help!!!

    Jeff-Spirit Jailbreak should would on your 3.1.3/5.12.1. Do http://www.spiritjb.com, download and follow instructions from there.

    Preet-I ran in the same issue several times. If you see the connect to itunes logo with multiple languages that general means you’ve updated to the new firmware but didn’t have the AT&T sim installed. You should be able to get back into the phone by putting in an AT&T or standard sim then plugging into itunes. You can go from there to “about” to see your current firmware data. If you did not save your shsh, you are SOL. If you happen to be lucky enough to save your shsh on 3.1.3 or prior you should be able to restore to the older jailbreakable firmware.
